Halloween is such a fun period, dressing up decorating your room and of course finally seeing pumpkins all over your local supermarket. Carving out pumpkin is just simple fun and a great bonding activity with your friends – maybe competitive if you’re with the competitive bunch. So grab your pumpkins, your tools and get your creative cap on.
Carving a pumpkin is easy, slightly messy but extremely fun. You start by cutting off the top of the pumpkin, raking out its inside and then start carving your desired face. Insert a battery operated candle and watch your pumpkin come to life. There are plenty of tutorials available.
Or for those who love the tradition but simply don’t enjoy the mess or are inspired to carve out pumpkins. Download the app ‘Jinn’ and get one pre-carved and delivered to your door. Obviously these come beautifully carved and can even come in under an hour – but these aren’t cheap so if you’re on a budget stick to the DIY approach.
A little history – for those who care
Or so known as a Jack-o’-lantern. Pumpkin carving is an old tradition that began with carving out turnips or pumpkins for the traditional Halloween. The origin of this tradition began in Ireland in the 19th Century. Traditionally, those who made them, were variously used to represent the spirits or supernatural beings and has also been said that the Jack-o’-lanterns originally represented Christian souls in purgatory, as Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day. For safety reasons, wax candles are not allowed within Chapter properties so pick up a battery operated candle instead – these can often be found in pound shops or your general supermarket.
